~In 1989, as an A&R executive at Epic Records I signed the So-Cal punk rock icons, Social Distortion. They were playing small clubs like the Cuckoos Nest in Costa Mesa and singer Mike Ness would introduce the band as, "That lil' ol' punk band from Fullerton!" For a brilliant marketing turn Epic records executives arranged for their headlining show at CBGBs to be broadcast live on the Sony jumbotron in Times Square and it was an amazing thing to see. Their debut album ended up selling more than 1,000,000 LPs in the US. They have toured with Neil Young, Foo Fighters, The Ramones, Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen who has been a huge fan. Last year, they headlined a show for over 12,000 people in Orange County, Ca. They are super popular all over the world and have always been the real deal. Leader Mike Ness has always displayed the essence of punk rock in sticking up for the disenfranchised putting his words, money and sometimes his fists whenever needed. Very proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Mike Ness and Social Distortion for three very successful albums.
I signed Indigo Girls who were my first big signing in 1988 at Epic Records/Sony Music. When I first met them, Amy Ray was living in student housing at Emory University and Emily Saliers was living at home with her parents. I first saw them in 1988 in Atlanta at the Little Five Points Pub and was just absolutely mesmerized. Their debut album was produced by Scott Litt who had produced the latest album for REM whose song, "Losing My Religion" became a world-wide radio hit. As a backing band REM played on a number of songs with lead singer Michael Stipe singing backing vocals on a number of songs (see pic) along with the Irish band, Hothouse Flowers whose guitarist Fiachna Ó Braonáin played the iconic penny whistle part on their radio hit, "Closer To Fine". Their debut album went on to sell more than 2,000,000 LPs in the US and they were nominated for two Grammys including Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Album which they won. 1989 saw them touring with Hothouse Flowers, REM, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and The Grateful Dead amongst others. During their 1992 US tour Siouxsie Sioux from Siouxsie & The Banshees would come onstage and sing Wheels On Fire and Strange Fruit with them. Sounds odd but, it really worked. They are good people, committed social activists, kind, compassionate and generous. All told they have sold over 7,000,000 albums, been nominated for 7 Grammy Awards went from playing small clubs in the Southeast to selling out Madison Square Garden
"Songs From the Pipe" the very last release of my last signing as VP of A&R at Epic Records/Sony Music was from a band called The Surfers. The Surfers were Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Peter King and was produced by T Bone Burnett. Featured backing musicians were members of Tom Waits' band, Joe Henry, Jon Brion, Jim Keltner and many more.
